500 km by cycle in Bangladesh 4 x 4 cycling group
Date : 04-2017
Tensions and uncertainties, instigated by uninterrupted detections of concealed terrorist’s “dens”, could not daunt the enthusiasm of the 4 schools x 4 participants (3 students and 1 teacher per school). They decided not to cancel their unique, cycling trip. IHS informed the local authorities about this cycling trip and the latter assured discreet but efficient protection.
The 500 km long adventure through the countryside of Bangladesh, brought us to extremely remote places where we visited houses built by IHS House Building Project.
Along our daily itinerary we enjoyed the overwhelming friendship and hospitality of the rural population of Bangladesh.
By train we crossed the 5.63 km “Bangabandhu Bridge” and continued our journey by cycle. We cycled more than 100km along the treacherous river banks of the Jamuna, a river which every year absorbs several hundreds of houses. We visited the Char islands in the North, crossed the Jamuna by boat between Gaibandha and Dewanganj and cycled parallel to the Indian border of Meghalaya, all the way to Jamalpur, Haluaghat. After visiting Durgapur and Birisiri we finally reached Netrakona, continued to Mymensingh and returned to Dhaka. On the way, Somoy Television made a nice report on the “Belzium group” (Link).
A superb experience for all students and teachers, who became enthusiastic IHS-ambassadors in Belgium!
